International Kodály Society Symposium 2023
Golden Anniversary: Connecting Humanity Through Music
26th Symposium Celebrating 50 Years
The 26th IKS Symposium took place from July 31 through August 4, 2023 at the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles, California, USA. This biennial international event served as a platform to educate, engage, support and foster connections for aspiring and experienced music educators, ethnomusicologists and musicians internationally. This Symposium celebrated 50 years of support for the International Kodály Society, which is active in 34 countries and has Affiliated National Organizations in 16 countries.
NCAKE was proud to contribute, and found this Symposium particularly meaningful given the origin of the first Symposium at Holy Names University (then College) in 1973. NCAKE wishes to acknowledge the tremendous work that was so generously provided by the Symposium Organizing Committee, Western Division, OAKE and the IKS Board.
This occasion not only represented many distinctive ways of connecting humanity through music, but also in connecting the many generations of NCAKE leaders and members together in organizing and attending such a momentous event.

BRIGHT MORNING STARS ARE RISING
50th Anniversary Anthology, Kodály Center at Holy Names University
Anne Laskey & Gail Needleman, Editors
This 50th Anniversary Anthology of the Kodály Center reflects the significant role the Kodály Center has played in implementing Zoltán Kodály's vision for music education in the United States and around the world.
This collection of 26 articles explores the basic tenets of Kodály's vision:
That music is for everybody
That music literacy is a universal right and not a secret language for a select few
That singing is the most human and universal of instruments
That folk music and art music are the most beautiful and lasting of musical forms
In realizing and implementing Kodály’s vision, these articles reflect on bringing Kodály’s ideas to American classrooms, along with articles that investigate Kodály's life and thought, and what these mean for us today. The articles are complimented by writings of some of the many Hungarian master teachers who have worked with Holy Names faculty to develop higher levels of musicianship, excellent materials and clear pedagogical goals in music teacher education.
